Getting the most of a VDS

Post by automatik »

Anyone here running more than 2 srcds servers from the basic VDS?

If so what is your game and slot count?

I am trying to decide if I need the 1x core or 2x core

Thanks

im running a few servers from the 2core one and everything seems to run fine, even if people are on the server and im transfering to the server via ftp or viewing with vnc there seems to be no hitches. :)

Could you give me some specs on the game servers you run?

Trying to decide between the 2x core vds or a quad core 2x2 opteron 4gb system for my needs

I would say
1xDODS Pub - 28slot
1xDODS Priv - 28slot
1xArmA 2 - 20-30 Slot pub or priv

Whats the name of your arma server, I ould like to come play sometime.

I generally dont have it up that often, usually only when a bunch of our group or friends wants to play we bring it up and pubbers like to join a fairly populated server. If it is up it's the World Gamers Online server. Im sure a 2core VDS would be sufficient, seeing as most private servers are not at capacity 24/7, however pubs can be. ArmA2 is your most resource intensive, more people in that server, the more chance of it slowing down the server.

The ones that will be full most of the time would be the DODS servers. For Realism community

The ArmA would be like yours. up when needed

Well Im sure the 2 core one would be fine. If not, its just a few simple clicks away to have them back up your files and move you to a 3core server for the extra cpu/ram.

forgot to mention, they have the free 2 day trial so you can test out the 2 core, and even move up to a 3 core during the trial. its not even charged to your account until the end of the 2 days ;)

Yea I am definitely going to give it a try.

I have a feeling I could run the 2 DODS off the 1core.. What do you think?
66tick - 333fps

I am just waiting for the Chicago to open up soon.

i would go with the first location available. VDSes go quick and with the InterNAP bandwidth, the connection is solid no matter where you are. besides, you can always request a transfer whenever they do become available in chicago.

Awesome. I will start with the 1core and go from there. I think I will run centOS or Gentoo. That should save me some CPU and RAM consumption

if your fine with just ssh, (or know how to enable GNOME/KDE) go with gentoo. if not, centos comes with GNOME pre-enabled.

true, theres always us on here though for any help, as well as various linux forums. i just noticed john added a new location (san jose) for VDSes. you should give it a shot, seeing as you have nothing to lose with the free trial ;).

also, if you prefer the responsiveness RDP for windows has over VNC, check out my forum topic free FreeNX. found it recently and use it on my server occasionally. works great
