VDS on Win2k8

Post by automatik »

Are there any services and tricks to minimizing total RAM use of the OS? I am going to change to Windows for ease of use through my unit as they do not know linux well and want to get the most out of my 1core VDS

To minimize RAM usage on Windows (or really any OS), the best idea is to shut down unneeded system services and applications. You can do this through the Services snap-in under Control panel->Administrative tools; services like "Server" generally aren't needed for standalone machines and can be safely stopped (if you're not sure whether one can be safely stopped, I recommend searching for info on it -- there's a lot out there).

Win2k8 seems piggy on memory at first because it uses all spare RAM for a temporary disk cache. On the "Performance" page, make sure to look at "Available" to get an idea of how much you still have left to work with, instead of "Free".

That's an good graph, since it indicates no drops or spikes and a fairly constant FPS.

It seems like they mean "standard deviation" when they say "TIME RMS", since their use of the term "RMS" does not meet the normal definition (the RMS should be greater than the mean value, and it only applies to waveforms). It doesn't look like the listed stdev matches the data in the graph, so I suspect that it might be skewed by the fact that your server wasn't running at the beginning. But, it's difficult to get a good sense from the graph, since they use a logarithmic scale.

Generally it's best to let the game run at the highest FPS it can, to keep things simple for it. If you don't want to run at 1000fps, it might result in a more stable reading to turn off HPET and unfetter fps_max; this will make the server run at 500fps.

I shut down the VDS and unchecked HPET to have it come back on when the page reloaded

So the HPET option doesn't seem to stick? I will check that out.

sorry to double post... would win2k3 be better suited for 500fps? I could go back to linux and setup vsftp but I would rather use windows so others can add files

All the Windows flavors should run similarly when not in HPET mode, but it might be worth a try.
