Want some information before buying a VDS

Post by Phar »

So after searching around I decided to get a VDS from NFo. However I want to know what I need to run the game servers I have in mind on it properly.

I plan on installing...

2 24-Slot Counter-Strike Source Server w/ SourceMod+MetaMod:S
1 16-Slot Counter-Strike Source Server w/ SourceMod+MetaMod:S
2 16-Slot Team Fortress 2 Server w/ SourceMod+MetaMod:S
1 10-Slot Garry's Mod Server w/ DarkRP and SourceMod+MetaMod:S with the prop limit being around 15 per person.
1 18-Slot Zombie Panic! Source Server w/ SourceMod+MetaMod:S

...on an unmanaged VDS with Windows 2003 Server x64bit.

I just don't want to buy it and then have servers lagging.

So should I get a Four Core or is it too resource heavy that I will need an Eight Core?

Sorry, I am not very adept when it comes to hardware. Virtual or not. :P

In addition to the sourcemod/metamod, what other plugins/additions are you planning to use?

Well on one of the CS:S servers I was planning on using a GunGame plugin. Then all the servers would have just SourceMod, MetaMod:S, SourceBans, RconLocker, D-FENS, DAF, and HLstatsX:CE.

Nothing too extreme.

With my experience thus far with NFO, I would say a 4 core VDS would be okay, not to mention that they allow upgrading at any time at pro-rated costs, so if the four doesn't work out, you can easily upgrade to 8, and it happens fairly quickly.

Of course, there is the "more power is always better" ideology, in which you would be guaranteed to run those with no issues whatsoever, and have room to run more as well.

I'd agree that a 4-core would be a good starting point for this, as that would give you plenty of memory to work with, and you could upgrade the package to a 6-core or 8-core later if you end up needing more CPU or bandwidth. (You can also upgrade or downgrade during the free trial period, if you need to, at no cost whatsoever.)

If you're considering Chicago as a location, spots should be available there again around the middle of next week. NYC and Dallas could accommodate a 4-core immediately.

It is, and I do apologize to the OP for hijacking this thread. I just had to ask, cause I've been waiting for a couple years it seems! :P

And by later this week, I meant early next week. For some reason I keep thinking that the week has just begun...

We've been offering VDSes for about a year now :)

I have been swamped, unfortunately, and have not had time to troubleshoot that machine further -- it's just sitting in the datacenter, unable to be used right now! I am trying to get to it as soon as I can.
