Simultaneous connections

Post by Pablo »

Hi, im just wondering why you have such low limits on simultaneous connections, the free 50 works fine for my game site, but I use another company for hosting another site and if it wasn't for that one thing I would definitely be sticking with you guys. :[

The connection limit of 50 is actually very high. This limit refers to the number of clients that are actively downloading from the site, not the number who are able to browse it at a time. Most sites that we host -- even popular forums with dozens of people browsing at once -- don't use above 10.

The limit is mostly in place to prevent runaway scripts and DDoS attacks from overwhelming the machine.

thats the best news ive ever heard, so loading media just to view on the page would not be considered a connection?

Any page load requires an open connection, but page loads on a well-designed site take very brief periods of time. For instance, it only took my browser 0.284s to load this page to reply to your post. With a limit of 50, you could handle 50 people loading the page at exactly the same time, or far more than that if they were spread out a little, as normal traffic always is.

I've only had a couple of customers exceed 50, and it was due to DoS attacks on their sites.

In a case like that, a person's browser would just have to wait a moment before the browser can load the page, since it is not likely to stay at 50 connections for much more than just a quick moment.

If you are wondering if about some sort of notification that lets you know if your site is getting so much traffic that it is hitting that limit, we don't currently have anything set up for that. If it becomes a problem to the point that people are reporting that the site loads slow, that may be why. Contacting us about it is a good idea at that point, so that we can verify if the problem is that or some other sort of issue.

That's not quite true. When 50 connections are reached, the webserver will start serving errors to incoming requests saying that it is over capacity.

I've gotten those errors on sites before. Usually says something about too much traffic and to try back later.
