Debian Squeeze - Authentication Failure

I just installed the GNOME Desktop Environment on my Debian Squeeze VDS. It says my login information doesn't work. This is the exact log in information on my Control Panel. This is pretty lame. I hope someone can fix it fast.

I haven't played around with Gnome on Squeeze. Does normal SSH still allow you to login as root? If so, it's possible that Gnome is set up by default to prevent root logins, and you may need to create another user to use the GUI.
