RO2 - Gamer Server vs VDS

This is used for general discussion that is not necessarily server-related.

RO2 - Gamer Server vs VDS

Post by Piraci »

Hi there,

I am currently looking to host a Red Orchestra 2 server for a tournament. As Tripwire recommended you guys I thought I'd look into it. This is the first time any of us have hosted a server we have some questions. Initially our server would be 32 players, but if popularity increases we'd look to getting up to 64 players.

Our big question is mod support. With the standard game server, can we install mods or modify the server files in any way?

Would a VDS server be a better choice? I assume since it has more control, I can mod it? The 4 core option is about $100, which is the same price for a 64 slot server. Will a 64 player server run well on the VDS? Is it possible to run 2 64 player servers or 2 32 player servers on the same VDS.

We might also want a L4D2 server. With the VDS option, could we host a RO2 server and a L4D2 server on the same VDS?

*edit* I also forgot to mention that while most of our group will be east coast US players, some will be in England. What would be the best location to minimize ping for the UK players. Generally, when they have under 120 lag is not noticeable.

Thanks for any help you guys provide.

RO2 isn't really recommended on VDS servers right now, other than very small servers perhaps. We mentioned this on our Facebook page:
Right now RO2 does not seem to like running on VDSes (unlike other games), causing much higher CPU usage than it should, and consequently preventing large servers from being run effectively. We're working with Tripwire on why this might be and how it can resolved.
I'm not sure how much modding ability RO2 has, but file access is the same on standard game servers and managed VDS servers. RO2 on unmanaged VDS servers would have unlimited OS access, so you may be able to do a bit more that way, depending on the level of modding you intend.

As for location, the best thing to do is have your users check this page for pings and IP's to test: https://www.nfoservers.com/networklocations.php

Wow thanks for the quick reply.

I don't really need full OS file access. I'm assuming by file access you mean on a standard game server I have access to all the files for the dedicated server. What I essentially want to be able to do is add custom maps, tweak game files that I can't on the webadmin, add custom mutations, possibly add a total conversion mod. This is really the only thing critical to our server needs, as we want to make the game realistic, and are a little disappointed with the current realism settings.

The standard FTP access with normal game server rentals should give you access to do all of that.
