ddos prevention?

Post by gamemann »

Hello everybody, i was looking into buying one of your dedicated machines for chicago area, now my other host gets ddosed alot, went through alot of hosts that keep getting ddosed, but i was wondering how good your ddos prevention is.
So basically a few questions:
1. Does it block most of the attacks?
2. If a attack gets through will you guys catch it?
Those are the basic questions.
Looking for a good host to do that,
thanks,
gamemann

We discuss how we handle (D)DoS attacks here: http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... =25&t=4931

If you purchase an unmanaged, or Windows-based managed, dedicated machine, we will have very few few tools to help you to handle your DDoS attacks. A managed Linux dedicated server or any type of VDS would be a much better choice if you expect to be hit frequently. Note, however, that a VDS would not be appropriate if you expect attacks in excess of 1 Gbps, as these would hur tother customers on the shared platform.

As John said above it really depends on the type of attack, the location you choose and your OS. If you are expecting to be attacked with very large attacks I would recommend Seattle or L.A as your location and some Linux based OS.
@Kraze^NFo> Juski has a very valid point
@Juski> Got my new signature, thanks!
@Kraze^NFo> Out of context!
@Juski> Doesn't matter!
@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can't take it back now! It's out there!

I'd need to know more about your attacks to say whether we could defend against them effectively. It would be best for you to contact us privately with further information.

I don't really know the dos/ddos details, it could be dos, or ddos.
I don't really know but i want it to be able to block ddos attacks as well, basically udp floods and tcp attacks.
Location of the machine i would want it to be: chicago(idk if they have the best equipment)
And we are getting the 3.4 ghz processor(intel xeon e3-1270).
I'll update the info later.
Thanks,

Okay guys, i just ordered a vps server unmanaged. Here are the specs:
processor: Intel i7 920 @ 2.67 ghz
ram: 2 gb
package: two core

Now 3 questions about it.
1. Can you guys block dos attacks easily, and can you tell me some good iptables for it too, and tell me how to set it up.
2. What is the connection speed, 100 mbps, 1 gbit? Hopefully more than 100 mbps XD
3. Can you guys stop ddos attacks quickly when it starts.
Basically i need some good firewall rules.
Thanks,
Gamemann

Since there are so many types of (D)DoS attacks, and you haven't been hit with one yet, we'll need to wait for that to happen and then go from there on the types of filters and steps that will be needed. If you see an attack on your end, please make a capture through the "Firewall" page and then contact us through the "Help!" page so that we can quickly look at it.

VDSes can use up to 1 Gbps. The line in Chicago is 10GE.
