Domain Name

Post by Hooah9211 »

I have recently purchased a domain name. I am currently using it for a website hosted with a different provider. I would like to change the server IP to game.xxxxxxxx.com. Would this interfere with navigation to my website? Also I have read many tutorials about pointing domains and such, but I am unable to figure out how I would first create, and then point the "game" part of game.xxxxxxx.com to the ip address for the server. Could you help walk me through or provide a tutorial for this, as long as it will not interfere with the current operation of my offsite website.

We have a guide on this here;

However that is for our webhosting control panel. The set up should be pretty much the same though.

Create a subdomain for the type of server such as gameserver.xxx.com or vent.xx.com. Then open up your DNS zone editor and enter the IP where you want it to point.

Ok, one last question. Do I need to input anything into the add a domain section? or does adding the subdomain and pointing my dns take care of everything? Also, this will not interfere with my website operation correct? I'm a complete newb when it comes to websites :P

Simply adding a subdomain and pointing that subdomain to the IP of your server should do it. It shouldn't interfere with your website, no.

What's the difference between register a domain and buy/sell a domain? I know there are people out there buying and selling domains. I also want to pick my own domain but all I can find is domain registration. Does that mean I don't own it so I can't sell it? How can I own a domain so that I can put it on auction?
