VDS crashes when downloading CS:GO files

Post by bmcirvin »

Whenever I start to download necessary files i.e., the csgo dedicated files, the server becomes unresponsive. At this point I am forced to reboot the server, yes I give it sufficient time to actually download the files, but upon rebooting I find that the files stopped downloading at the time the server became unresponsive.

This is a known problem with the CS:GO downloader (specifically and exclusively) that has come up a few times on this forum. One thread a few down the page that talks about it is this one: http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... =44&t=7311. In my last post in that thread, I said:
The only time that I was able to reproduce this myself, it was on a 1-core VDS. I upgraded that VDS to 2 GB of RAM (without changing anything else) and it worked as it should, suggesting that it was a problem with memory in some way. Did you have low free memory when the reboot occurred?

If it occurs regardless of the memory situation, and it's reproducible, please open a support request, and we can try the latest version of Xen and latest GPLPV drivers. If those don't work, we can involve the author of the drivers.

I was advised to change the OS to 2003 x64, which did solve the issue I was having. I don't know whether the reformat or the change in OS is what helped but nonetheless I am not having the problem anymore.

2003 is a little lighter on resources than 2008. Maybe just enough left over memory to keep it from crashing.

The Xen drivers also work in a little different way on Win2k3. If this is due to a problem with them, that could explain it.

Should I re-download the whole CS:GO DS installation just to try to reproduce this (inevitably going to happen all the time) then send in a support request so you can possibly involve the GPLPV driver author? I'd really like it squared away possibly before the next CS:GO Beta server update and at least before the full game is released.

TimSad, yes, we could pursue it that way. Are you already running the latest released GPLPV driver from http://meadowcourt.org/downloads/gplpv_ ... .0.357.msi?

Have you received crashes during the regular partial updates?

Can you tell me how to check the driver version that I am currently on?

There still hasn't been a game server update ever since I've gotten the CS:GO DS installed.

You can see the version through the driver page of the network adapter dialogs, but if you haven't installed a new one yourself, it's a safe bet that you're running an older one, as default installs come with an older one.

It claims to indeed be 0.11.0.357 like your link. Is it strange that my VDS installation came with this updated driver?

It is possible that I had you upgrade it already, or that I updated the default install and just don't remember doing it :). If the latter is the case, it was probably done along with some Windows updates.

Steamcmd is crashing my VDS as well. Has crashed it three times in a row.

2008 R2 x64. 2 core/2gb. Only at 30% physical memory usage when it was started. The third time it crashed task manager showed 46% physical memory used. Also using the driver version stated in a previous post.

This command (in a batch file) has crashed the VDS the three times I have tried it so far (nexuiz dedicated server):

Code: Select all

steamcmd "+login mysteamid" "+force_install_dir c:\servers\nexuiz" "+app_update 96810 validate"
I'd prefer to not have to downgrade to 2003. I'm still in my two day trial period and would like to see a resolution for this.

I don't think that the GPLPV author could have a resolution for us within 2 days, unfortunately. In the very near term, you could switch to Win2k8 (non-R2), which seems to work normally, try different versions of the GPLPV drivers, or try different network settings. Something about what steamcmd is doing is just not working well with GPLPV.

Since the nexuiz files are free and open to all Steam users, that may make it possible for him to reproduce the problem with steamcmd, which would be a very good start. I am going to work on reproducing it myself and then giving him a VDS to test with and the full set of reproduction steps.
