Unmanaged VPS, TF2

Post by elfenlied ftw »

I've been looking at this VPS on the list:
Two core: Good for 2-6 game servers or several large sites.
Two full, dedicated HT CPU cores (Nehalem or better)
2048 MB of RAM
200 GB of RAID-protected storage
2000 GB of InterNAP bandwidth transfer
I intend to host the following:
  • A 32 slot TF2 MvM server (see below)
  • A 24 slot TF2 CTF server
  • A simple website that will mainly be used for redirect hosting, and some server control panel stuff.
  • Possibly a CS:GO server in the future (don't know yet, haven't ordered the game yet. lol)

I haven't hosted a webserver on windows before. I've setup Debian in VMware and I've managed a webserver and a TF2 server in it rather easily. That said, I'd probably go with Debian for the OS (or maybe the recommended Gentoo OS if it's similar enough). I'm still pretty new to linux stuff.

So my question is this - will this VPS option be able to handle all of this? Any issues here?

A TF2 MvM (Mann vs Machine) server is up to 6 actual players, and the rest of the slots are for bots. It's kinda like a COOP survival thing. That said, with all those bots the server will probably use more resources.

I wouldn't recommend running a web-server from the same machine as your game servers since it can introduce performance and security concerns.

Depending on the machine your VDS is put on, it should be able to handle two of those servers. Since you are running MvM it can lead to higher usage, Valve says it uses about the same as a normal 32 slot server.
@Kraze^NFo> Juski has a very valid point
@Juski> Got my new signature, thanks!
@Kraze^NFo> Out of context!
@Juski> Doesn't matter!
@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can't take it back now! It's out there!
