VNC console vs RDC

Post by pandaman09 »

I have used both the VNC console in the control panel and the Remote Desktop Connection tool on windows, however; when I disconnect from the server, leaving the account logged on, it will close any applications running and log the user off. If I use the VNC console, the user is never logged of, but instead put into sleep mode.

I was wondering why can I use the VNC and not worry about the game server shutting down randomly, but when I use the RDC it does?

RDC should not log you off when you disconnect (it has never done that for me). Instead, it should leave everything running and the desktop unchanged. What process are you using to disconnect? Is this Win2k3 or Win2k8+?

First, thanks for the fast response.

The server is Windoes2k3 x64, and when I close the RDC it doesn't log off imedatly, it logs off after a few minutes, I usually do not know because I use it right before I go to bed, and the owner of the server tells me that the server shut down for no reason. When I log back in the next day, it is completely logged off and the windows that were open are closed. Also, the VNC and the RDC seem to use different accounts, even though I can log in with both with the same password and same username.

Do you have any software installed that might do this, or have the screen saver enabled or power settings configured? It definitely doesn't do this normally.

Confusingly, Win2k3 has three desktops: One visible through VNC (the console), and two usable through Remote Desktop (different client IPs will typically different ones, and if you log in twice at the same time, you'll see different ones).

That's weird, and yes the screen saver is enabled (I think). I cannot change the power settings on the RDC, only on the VNC. I will just disable the screen saver and see if that fixes things.

I would like you to know for future reference, if you are on an unmanaged VDS and you have the screen saver enabled, it will cause your applications to close.

I changed the settings on the Remote Connection and the game server is still up, but the VNC version went down again.

I figured it would be helpful if anyone else has a similar problem down the line.

Thank you very much,
Panda

I have a VDS with screensaver enabled. Nothing closes.
