How does matchmaking work?

MoHW has a "Quick match" button that can be used to quickly join a server. Inside the game, and by default in Battlelog, this button selects from ranked servers running predefined playlists only ("RealOps"/"Warfighter"/etc). However, if a client sets filter settings that include the "Custom" playlist type (optionally, along with other choices), the "Quick match" function will respect that and find a Custom server with the chosen specifications.
