In order for the server to recognize the new RAM, the server would need to be restarted, yes.

I am looking to upgrade my server, most likely I will do it in the AM, right now my server is peaking at 78% CPU usage with only about 450 Mhz of ram free.

We are seeing performance dips at ~65% CPU, definitely get that upgrade asap or lower some settings :P

L4D2 takes quite a bit of memory btw. Frequent map changes and the AI director, takes up around 300MB I've observed.

I noticed, when my L4D2 servers are offline it frees up about 800mhz of ram.

I am debating if I should just increase 1GB ram or go with 1GB RAM + 1 Core.

Decision decision..

Wouldn't it cost the same? I read somewhere on here that if you can upgrade the ram its still $20/m, which is probably around the same as a full core upgrade. If you're seeing that high of cpu usage you should probably get the core too if your budget allows for it.

1GB ram upgrade = $10
1 core+ 1GB ram = $20

probably for the best, $10 for a CPU core and don't you get the extra HDD and bandwidth as well?

The good thing is, the CPU since the core upgrade has been made has been steady under 50% under full load.
