New to unmanaged VPS

We currently have a managed VDS that works nicely for CoD2, Arma2, BF3, website etc.

However there are times we would like the flexibility of an unmanaged server for something like DayZ.

I have no experience working with an unmanaged server.

Are there some tutorials or guides that could help me get started? It would be much appreciated.

On windows it is pretty much the same as having the server right in front of you.

Things to remember:
BF3 CANNOT be run on an unmanaged windows vds.
You lose everything if you switch from managed to unmanaged.
