Unmanaged VDS and Unreal Tournament

Post by RickJames »

Hi, I'm considering purchasing a VDS running Windows Server 2008 R2 to run Unreal Tournament (99) servers on. It would be unmanaged, since I don't need any more than two cores. I have a few questions that I'm hoping someone can help me with.

My first question is: Is it possible to run 2 or 3 UT servers from the same ip, using different ports? I've seen this done on a linux VDS before, but I'm not sure how it works on windows. If it's possible, how would I go about doing this? If it's not possible, I'm assuming I need to buy multiple ips.

My second question is about the setup process. I'm assuming that after I purchase the VDS, I would simply need to install an ftp server, transfer the necessary UT server files via ftp, then start servers using batch files. Is this process essentially correct? Also, this goes back to my first question, but where does assigning ips fit into this? Is there anything else I would need to do to the server to ensure optimal performance?

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Yes, doing so is very possible and widely used among many companies. I wouldn't imagine the process is any different then Linux besides the use of a GUI. When creating the server you simply enter a different port.

I am not very familiar with UT servers but I imagine like most games this is done when configuring the command line.

What you listed is essentially correct, yes.

FTP would be a way of doing it. You could also just use RDP and have the VDS download the files for you with its connection. That would cut out an extra step of needing to get the files, setup an FTP server then transfer the files.
@Kraze^NFo> Juski has a very valid point

@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can't take it back now! It's out there!

Because your looking at a Windows server, you wouldn't need a FTP server.
You can log in through Remote Desktop, open a browser and download the files directly to your server.

As for assigning the port, some games have ports setup in the config file but for the most part, it's added in your command line which would be in your .bat file.
