NFo Fast DL servers not really fast.

Post by IcEWoLF »

Bottom line is, I run a CS:GO server, we download a fair amount of workshop maps. When I have nearly 30 people downloading those maps, it can take anywhere from a minute and half to two minutes for the users to completely download the maps.

I remember the DL speed use to be better, even with a full server back in the day.

So what will NFo do to improve performance?
The map sizes are not bad at all.

Workshop maps are downloaded through Steam, not through our fast download system. To use our webhosting for your downloads, you'd need to run the server in normal (non-workshop) mode, with regular maps that you've uploaded to its "maps" folder.

More generally, we monitor our webhosting machines closely to make sure that CPU, memory usage, and I/O wait times remain low, and we have have not been experiencing speed problems with our webhosting recently. If you did see a problem with a specific shared webhosting machine, you'd need to contact us directly to investigate (we have many of them, so we'd have to look at your machine specifically). Routing would be another item that we would need to look at, as even minor packet loss to a client would significantly decrease his or her download speeds.

John, I do not run a workshop server, I download those maps from the workshop then add them to the server manually, after that I simply go to websync and sync them to the web host server since with the vps service we don't get free fast dl server, so we have to add a separate hosting plan to be able to take advantage of this service. (Which is through you guys)

Now, are the separate web hosting that we have to subscribe optimized for fast dl speeds?
I opened a ticket before and I didn't get much help besides being suggested that I should delete the contents of the fast dl server and resync everything which didn't do anything.
It's impossible for me to simply test this by myself because if one person is download the map, of course it would download fast, but if multiple users are downloading things at the same time, that's when we are having issues.

The machines themselves are highly tweaked and optimized for performance, yes. You shouldn't see any overall issues with download speeds.

In your first response you mention it only takes 1-2 minutes to get the "maps". Are you speaking on a per map basis or multiple maps?

When you download them from the website itself does it download fast? also how big are the maps?
@Kraze^NFo> Juski has a very valid point

@Kraze^NFo> Out of context!
@Juski> Doesn't matter!
@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can't take it back now! It's out there!

I know this thread is kind of old, but we have servers ranging from 30 to 62 slot which are consistently full with 100% custom maps, and in my experience the download time is reasonable. I monitor my bandwidth all the time with a net-meter on my 2nd screen, and when joining those servers I cap out my 30Mb/s download speed.

I doubt this is an issue for you, but files over a certain size(200MB i think) are capped to discourage file mirrors etc.

Routing as mentioned before can be a big factor in download speed(especially for me, across the country from NFO's web servers). My ISP had some maintenance one night, and instead of capping my 30Mb/s speed it was more like 3Mb/s, it happens :(

Which web server are you on? I'm on hosted5 and have been getting peak d/l speeds all day

I personally run a service on hosted15 + hosted7. I've never had speed problems. I usually max out my home connection when downloading from hosted15 in particular.

IcEWoLF, did you already open a support request? If you have, I have not seen it yet, so I haven't been able to run further tests. Please ask them to escalate it to me.

hosted3 is doing well overall. Nice low CPU, low memory usage, low load, and little disk activity. This makes sense, as we haven't put any new customers on it in at least a year.

John, I haven't done any testing as of late, we mainly run valve maps now, will run some custom maps later on and see how things are.
