Multiple IP's vs. Different Ports

Post by mikedbom »

I apologize if this has been asked before but I could not resolve my answer with a search.

I have a COD4 game server running on an unmanaged VDS with B3. I'd like to add a second game server and am wondering if I should get a second IP address or use another port like 28961. I am currently running out of port 28960.

Is there any advantage to having a second IP address?
Is there any disadvantage to using another port number instead of a second IP address?
If anyone is familiar with B3 Bot, does either one of these choices impact setting up B3 for a second game server?

Thanks in advance.

The main advantages to using different IP addresses are that clients can connect directly to the each server without specifying a port, and that if one IP address gets null-routed, it won't take down both servers at once. The latter doesn't come up much, so you'd mostly be considering the former.

In terms of how the server runs, either solution works just fine. B3 should support both configuration types, as well.
