Supporting Discourse

Post by steviezee »

Is there any chance NFO would consider supporting Discourse as another discussion forum platform?

http://www.discourse.org/

Discourse is the 100% open source, next-generation discussion platform built for the next decade of the Internet. Whenever you need a mailing list, a forum to discuss something or a chat room where you can type paragraphs, consider Discourse.

It requires:

Postgres 9.1
Redis 2.6
Ruby 1.9.3

I think this would be a fantastic opportunity for NFO to build out its webhosting infrastructure?

Thanks

Are you suggesting replacing NFO's phpbb forums we are on now with this software, or supporting it on their web hosting? If it uses fairly standard php modules and common software a web host would have, they likely already support it on their web hosting. If some things are missing for the software to function, they may be able to add support if the requirements aren't arbitrary.

We can investigate the possibility of supporting Postgres in the future, although doing so would require quite a bit of development. In terms of the Ruby component, right now we're sort of stuck with 1.8 because we have to choose between 1.8 and 1.9 and some of the applications that we and customers run require 1.8. That should change down the road.

Well thanks for answering. Discourse is definitely shaping up to be a formidable forum replacement, so I am hoping that NetHosting would seriously consider supporting Postgres/Redis to get this incorporated.

Since you got us mixed up with another company there, I take it that you're posting this in a bunch of places :).

If you're one of the developers of Discourse, I wish you luck in spreading the word.

Always the option of renting an unmanaged vds(linux only is just $15/m atm) and windows is a little more per month. Considering what you get all to yourself, it is probably a good option compared to shared hosting. That is if you're comfortable administrating your own server, though.
